The Italian Riviera: A Dream Destination for All Travellers

If you are looking for a place to enjoy the sun, the sea, and the culture of Italy, look no further than the Italian Riviera. You can’t help but be struck by Liguria’s unique climate and landscape; with palm trees, citrus fruits, and olives growing alongside chestnuts and wildflowers. It is divided into two parts: the Riviera di Ponente (Western Riviera) and the Riviera di Levante (Eastern Riviera), with Genoa as the capital and the dividing point. We spend 4 days exploring the Levante on our 12 Day Treasures of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria tour.

After enjoying the vine clad hills of Piedmont and the lush Appenine foothills of Lombardy guests spend four days immersed between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea in Liguria. We stay for four nights at the seaside town of Sestri Levante, with its two beautiful bays- the Bay of Fables and the Bay of Silence. From here we set off to explore the Cinque Terre National Park, the seaside town of Camogli, the historical port city of Genoa, the beautiful abbey of San Fruttuoso and have heaps of fun during our Ligurian cooking lesson! You also get to have one day to yourself to either rest or set off to explore another part of Liguria or revisit the picturesque Cinque Terre towns. Of course, during this time we will also be experiencing the delightful food and wine that Liguria has to offer!

The Cinque Terre comprising the five colourful villages of Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park. The villages are connected by hiking trails that offer stunning views of the sea and the countryside. You can also take a train or a boat to visit them and enjoy their charm and atmosphere.
Portofino: This small fishing village is one of the most glamorous and exclusive places in Italy. It attracts celebrities and jetsetters who come to admire its harbour, its pastel-coloured houses, and its luxury shops and hotels.

Genoa: The largest city and port of Liguria is a cultural and historical treasure. It was once a powerful maritime republic that rivalled Venice and Pisa. You can explore its old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its narrow alleys (carruggi), its splendid palaces (Palazzi dei Rolli), and its impressive cathedral (San Lorenzo). You can also visit its aquarium, the largest in Italy and second largest in Europe.

The Gulf of Poets: This bay near La Spezia was named after the English poets Byron and Shelley, who lived and wrote here in the 19th century. You can visit their former residences in Lerici and San Terenzo, as well as other charming towns like Portovenere, which has a Romanesque church and a castle overlooking the sea.
The cuisine: The food of Liguria is simple but delicious. It’s based on fresh ingredients from the land and the sea. The most famous dish is pesto, a sauce made with basil, garlic, pine nuts, cheese, and olive oil. You can try it with trofie or trenette, two types of pasta typical of Liguria. Other specialties include focaccia (a flat bread with various toppings), farinata (a chickpea pancake), anchovies (fried or marinated), seafood (especially mussels), and sciacchetrà (a sweet wine).

San Fruttuoso Abbey: This Abbey is nestled in a small bay and exudes an enchanting beauty. Its ancient stone buildings, surrounded by lush greenery and turquoise waters, evoke a sense of timelessness and serenity. The abbey’s remote location, accessible only by sea or hiking trails, adds to its mystique. It was founded by the Order of Saint Benedict, with most of its buildings dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries.
