The Abbey of San Fruttuoso: A Hidden Gem on the Italian Riviera

Abbey of San Fruttuoso, its architecture, turquoise waters, overlooking the bay.

The Abbey of San Fruttuoso is a stunning monastic complex on the Italian Riviera. It is in a small cove of the Portofino promontory, between Camogli and Portofino, and can only be reached by boat or by hiking trails. We visit the Abbey on day eleven of our 12 Day Treasures of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria tour.

The abbey dates back to the 10th century, when it was founded by Greek monks who brought the relics of Saint Fructuosus, a third-century bishop and martyr from Spain. The abbey was later expanded and modified by the Benedictine order, the Doria family, and other noble patrons. The abbey consists of several buildings, such as the Romanesque church, the cloisters, the loggia, and the watchtower. The abbey also contains tombs of members of the Doria family, who were prominent in Genoese politics and naval history.

The abbey is now owned by Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), a heritage organisation that restored it and opened it to the public in 1983. Visitors can admire the architecture and art of the abbey, as well as learn about its history and culture. The abbey also hosts concerts, exhibitions, and events throughout the year.

One of the most fascinating attractions of San Fruttuoso is the Christ of the Abyss, an underwater bronze statue of Jesus that was installed in 1954 at a depth of 17 metres. The statue was created by Guido Galletti as a memorial for Dario Gonzatti, a diver who died in 1947. The statue is a symbol of peace and protection for sailors and divers and can be seen by snorkelling or scuba diving.

San Fruttuoso also offers a beautiful beach where visitors can relax and enjoy the sun and the sea. The beach is small and pebbly but has clear water and a stunning view of the abbey. The beach is also equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a bar.

San Fruttuoso is a unique and enchanting place that combines nature, history, art, and spirituality. It is a hidden gem on the Italian Riviera that will surely captivate you with its charm. It is a place we never tire of returning to!
